About

I'm angry. You should be too.

Someone called you on your phone — just like they did with my dad. Talked badly about your current supplier. Told you they'd get you the best rate. Promised they'd save you money. Did they tell you how much they were being paid to make that call? Did they show you the supplier's rate and the markup they were quietly adding on top? No. They counted on you not asking. They've been doing it for years. 9 out of 10 UK businesses have this hidden markup sitting in their unit rate right now and most of them have no idea it's there. My dad was one of them.

My dad's restaurant

£25,200. Stolen

Lost over 6 years · And still bleeding

That's what he paid in hidden Broker Tax since he took it over in 2020. Across both his electricity and gas bills. We had no idea any of it was happening.

Electricity

£18,000

£3,000 a year for 6 years

Gas

£7,200

£1,200 a year for 6 years

It was our first business. My dad knew the kitchen inside out, he'd cooked his whole life. But the rest of running a restaurant? We were learning all of it as we went. Suppliers, staff, food waste, VAT, health & safety inspections, the lot. You'll know what that's like if you've started something from scratch. Energy was just another bill that came in every month. We paid it. We moved on.

The broker found us by cold-calling. He didn't help us get the lease, didn't find us the location, didn't do any of the real work. He just rang one day promising the best rates on the market. We took him at his word.

That's £25,200 he took from us. £25,200 that could have carried us through the quiet months. Replaced kitchen equipment which was on its last leg. Paid ourselves something close to a real wage in the years the restaurant was barely surviving. Gone. To someone we trusted.

Early 2026

I went looking for ways to save.

By the end of 2025 the restaurant was still tight. Business had slowed down, costs were going up. I went through every line item looking for somewhere to cut. Energy was the biggest eater.

So I rang the broker. The guy we'd been with for six years. "Look, we've been with you a long time. We need better rates. Can you do something?" He told us we were already on the cheapest rates he could find. Best deal on the market.

This time I didn't take his word for it. Something in my gut told me he was lying. So I started reading. How the energy industry actually works. The difference between what suppliers charge and what ends up on your bill. How brokers can quietly stack their own commission onto your unit rate — without ever telling you it's there. That's when it clicked. How the hell is this even allowed?

I sat down with my dad. Pulled out every old bill. The two original three-year contracts — one for electricity, one for gas. Six years of statements. I worked out what we should have been paying and what we actually paid. £4,200 a year. £3,000 of it on the electricity contract. £1,200 on gas. Every year for six years.

He never told us. Never disclosed it. Never offered to lower it. The same guy who told us we were "like family" to him. The same guy who said he'd always look after us. Sitting on a margin we paid for — every single month — while we cut staff hours and skipped paying ourselves.

Then I went to check the renewal paperwork. It was already done. My dad had been rolled into a brand new three-year contract back in January — same broker, but this time he'd had the cheek to push the markup up to £5,750 a year combined across both bills. I didn't find any of this out until March. Locked in until January 2029.

By the time he's free in 2029, that's another £17,250 on top of the £25,200 already paid. £42,450 total. Taken from one family, by one broker.

There's nothing I can do for him until January 2029. But when that renewal comes around, that broker is done. He's not getting another contract out of us.

Then I checked around

It wasn't just us.

Once I knew what to look for, I started checking my friends businesses. My friend's Italian restaurant up in Gosforth. My favourite takeaway. The dessert shop I always go to in town. My barber. The garage where I take my car to get it serviced and MOT'd, over near Newcastle College. Every single one had the same problem. None of them knew about it.

Thirty minutes per contract was all it took — pull the bill, find the supplier's real rate, work out what the broker had stacked on top. Different brokers, different numbers, same con.

When I told them what I'd found, every one of them was furious. They'd trusted their brokers. They'd been told they were on the best deal. Not one of them had ever thought to ask what the broker was making on top.

Their broker tax · Per year

£2,000 – £4,500

Across five small businesses · Electricity alone

This is the industry default. Built into the system so you never notice it. That's exactly how they get away with it.

And that's why I'm here to kill it.

It's not just our circle

And it's not just a few of us.

Our friends were losing £2,000 – £4,500 a year on electricity. My dad lost £25,200 across six years. That's extortion — but here's how big this actually gets.

Ofgem ran an investigation and found a UK business paying £24,000 in hidden Broker Tax in a single year. One year. Not six. That was half their entire energy bill — quietly siphoned off to a broker who lied straight to their face. The business had no clue. The broker never said a word.

And it's not one case. It's an industry.

In 2023, law firm Harcus Parker launched a class action lawsuit against UK energy suppliers for paying brokers secret commissions that were quietly added to customer's unit rates. More than 5,000 businesses joined the claim. It's worth £2 billion.

The investigation found one supplier offering brokers up to 10p per kWh in commission — quietly stacked onto the unit rate the business actually paid. Same pattern we found on my dad's bills. Different broker, same con.

Up to two million UK businesses are estimated to be affected. Ofgem has known about it for years. They've never properly fixed it.

That's why I built this. Not because it's a clever business idea. Because I'm furious about what's happening to people running real businesses — and someone has to actually do something about it.

The obvious question

But you work with brokers too.

Why is that different?

Fair question. And honestly, you should be asking it. So here's what's different.

When you choose to fight back, your details go to one vetted specialist from my panel. Not five. Not ten. One. They send you a Letter of Authority — a permission slip that lets them request live quotes from suppliers on your behalf. That's all it does. It doesn't switch your contract. It doesn't lock you into anything. It just lets them ask the question.

They come back with what they found. If it beats what you're paying, take it. If it doesn't, walk away. No fees from us. No pressure from them. Your call.

And if a specialist on my panel ever pulls predatory behaviour — pressures you, lies to you, hides what they're earning — tell me and they're off. No second chances. My panel only works if you can trust it. The whole thing falls apart otherwise.

What I want

To kill the Broker Tax.

For UK business owners to stop being the easy mark. For hidden markup to be over. For my dad and your friends and every shop on the high street to stop paying for someone else's margin while they're trying to keep the lights on.

Every business that finds out is one less rip-off. If even half of you switch when your renewal comes up, that's tens of thousands of pounds going back where it belongs. Into real businesses. Paying real wages. Growing instead of just surviving.

My dad is locked in until January 2029. There's nothing I can do for him until then. But when that renewal comes around, that broker is done. He's not getting another contract out of us. Not while I'm here.

Same goes for you. Upload your bill. See what you've actually been paying. Then decide. Stay. Switch. Walk away knowing the truth. Your call. But make it with the real numbers in front of you.

That's what I want out of this.

Don't fall for the same lies we did and get locked into a contract you can't escape.

Once you sign, you are trapped. A single hidden markup can quietly drain £3,000 to £5,000 every single year until your contract finally ends. Don't find out the hard way when it's already too late.
